It has two forms that can be administered in 20 minutes to either individuals or in groups. Each form contains 50 spelling words drawn from eight basal spelling series and graded word lists. The TWS-5 provides percentiles, standard scores, age and grade equivalents. The Answer and Record Form offers a convenient way to record and keep track of scores, summarize the results, and indicate any comments and recommendations. Administration and Scoring The TWS-5 can be administered in 20 minutes to either groups or individuals. Scores may be reported as standard scores, percentiles, spelling ages, and grade equivalents. The TWS-5 was standardized on a nationally stratified normative sample. The results of the TWS-5 can be used for three specific purposes: to identify students whose scores are significantly below those of their peers and who might need interventions designed to improve spelling proficiency, to document overall progress in spelling as a consequence of intervention programs, and to serve as a measure for research efforts designed to investigate spelling.

The WIST has three subtests which can be used in either the Norm-Referenced or Informal assessment. The Norm-Referenced assessment has two 'core' subtests (Word Identification and Spelling) and one 'supplemental' subtest (Sound-Symbol Knowledge) and a composite score (called the Fundamental Literacy Index). A low score on this test may mean the student could not decode the test items, so also consider the Word Attack and Word Identification scores. PASSAGE COMPREHENSION This test measures the student’s ability to study a sentence or short passage (2-3 sentences long) and exercise a variety of comprehension and vocabulary skills in identifying. Word Identification: Word Identification measures word reading accuracy which includes (a) students' sight recognition of familiar words and their ability to apply word attack skills in order to decode unfamiliar words and (b) their sight recognition or orthographic memory of high frequency words with one or more irregularities.

The new Woodcock-Johnson IV Tests of Achievement – (WJ-IV-ACH) includes 20 tests for measuring four broad academic domains: reading, written language, mathematics, and academic knowledge. A completely new configuration, with new tests and clusters, supports a broad range of diagnostic assessment needs for a wide variety of professionals to determine academic strengths and weaknesses. A new comparison of achievement scores to academic knowledge can provide additional information to help determine if a more comprehensive evaluation should be considered.
